Preparations for Sunderland… here we come!

We are very busy at The Caravan Gallery HQ preparing for the first part of our two year exhibitions and touring programme… first stop Sunderland.

So much has been going on behind the scenes to create our forthcoming exhibition: extra{ordinary} – Photographs of Britain by The Caravan Gallery, our Sunderland Pride of Place Project and the Sunderland Caravan Gallery Tour – with the wonderful help and support of our colleagues and many project partners. This is the first leg in a tour made possible with ACE Strategic Touring funds. extra{ordinary} will then be shown at Impressions Gallery Bradford;  Diffusion Festival, Cardiff; Museum of Lancashire, Preston; mima, Middlesbrough and Solent Showcase, Southampton. We’ll set up simultaneous place-specific participatory Pride of Place Projects and a local caravan tour in each of these places.

Over the past few months we have been: working with our talented curatorial team to select from thousands of images we have in our archive for the exhibition; working with our designers IDprojects on a brand new hardback publication and exhibition publicity material; sorting our prints and frames for exhibitions; preparing our 1969 caravan for new adventures – we took him to The English Caravan Company for  a makeover only to be told that emergency surgery was required. Our reincarnated model (with transplanted features) is a real stunner and will be the subject of a future blog post.

On top of all this we’ve also been taking care of all those little bits and pieces that seem to take forever in preparation for our major tour.
